Based in the hills of Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture, Abo is a prominent maker of the Tsugaru strain, the youngest of the eleven traditional kokeshi lineages. Mr. Abo, who was an apprentice of the famous Sato Zenji, and his son (Masafumi) craft Tsugari Kokeshi in their workshop in the hills outside of Kuroishi, Aomori prefecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCarved from a solid piece of wood, the doll features the vibrant floral patterns and multicolor lathe-work (rokuru) lines typical of the Nuruyu style. It is finished with a traditional Okappa bob hairstyle and a topknot, with visible brushstrokes along the hairline.
