This rare Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll is hand-carved from beautifully grained wood by master Aida Seihou (Harumine, 1926–1998). It features a wonderfully stylized silhouette with elegant kimono lines and a sculptural, three-dimensional obi sash at the base. The serene, minimalist face is hand-painted with closed eyes and a subtle touch of color, perfectly contrasting against the natural wood.
Size (approx.): height: 20,2 cm, weight: 200 g
Condition: Very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The underside features the artist's authentic impressed signature stamp.
Artistic Note
Aida Seihou’s work beautifully connects traditional Japanese kokeshi craft with mid-century modern design. Instead of using heavy paint, he lets the natural wood grain bring the doll to life. The standout feature of this piece is the "chattering" technique used on the crown and the offset topknot (mage). This hand-chiseled, rhythmic texture adds a rich, tactile feel to the hair, creating a stunning contrast against the perfectly smooth face and the sharp, clean lines of the kimono.
