This vintage Japanese necklace by Amita features the traditional Damascene Zogan (象嵌) inlay technique. Lines are chiseled in a criss-cross pattern onto a steel foundation. 24K gold and sterling silver are pounded into the design. The steel surface is corroded with nitric acid, rusted, and then stabilized by boiling in green tea. Lacquer is baked over the entire surface, followed by polishing the gold and silver out with soft charcoal. Final fine engravings complete the piece.
