Set of 5 vintage Japanese Arita-yaki (有田焼) porcelain hashioki (chopstick rests), presented in the original box labeled 有田焼 箸置 – “Arita ware, chopstick rests.”

Arita is one of Japan’s most historic porcelain centers, renowned since the 17th century for its fine white porcelain and refined decoration. Each oval rest is hand-painted in underglaze blue and soft polychrome enamels. The motifs combine maritime and European-inspired imagery: a sailing ship, stylised gentlemen in historical dress, floral ornament, and a monogram resembling the emblem of the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) – the Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602.

The VOC played a crucial role in early global trade and was instrumental in exporting Japanese Arita porcelain to Europe during the Edo period. As the Dutch were the only Western traders permitted in Japan at that time (via Dejima in Nagasaki), their presence became closely linked with the international history of Japanese porcelain. Decorative references to VOC trade symbolise this important chapter of cultural and artistic exchange between Japan and Europe.
