Artisan Note: Suigai Sato (b. 1920)
Born in Gunma Prefecture, Suigai Sato (given name Sadahachi) initially trained in traditional painting before dedicating himself to creative sosaku kokeshi in 1946. He received the prestigious Prime Minister's Award in 1966 and was honored by the Imperial Family in 1970. Sato is renowned for his clean, turned wooden forms, elaborate traditional hairstyles, and tranquil facial expressions. His work frequently features delicate botanical carvings - including plum blossoms, bamboo, wild grasses, and mountain grapes - set against natural wood tones or vividly colored kimonos.
