This rare set of three vintage Sosaku Kokeshi was handcrafted by the artist Daisuke Takeda, who was active during the 1970s. These dolls are a beautiful example of Takeda-san’s signature style, known for their substantial weight, balanced proportions, and a mastery of highlighting the natural wood grain. Each figure is finished with minimalist hand-painted details that harmonize perfectly with the warm, earthy tones of the wood.
The set features the traditional Japanese motif of Sho-Chiku-Bai, also known as the Three Friends of Winter. This trio consists of the Pine (Sho), Bamboo (Chiku), and Plum blossom (Bai), which together symbolize perseverance, vitality, and good fortune. The pine represents longevity, the bamboo stands for strength and flexibility, and the plum blossom signifies hope as the first flower to bloom while snow is still on the ground.
The set comes with an original small stand with Japanese inscription:
