This pendant necklace is a fine example of the Higo Zogan (肥後象嵌) inlay technique, a traditional Japanese metalwork art originating from the Higo region. The pendant features a delicate gold bamboo motif set against a dark base, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship and timeless elegance of this historic technique, once used in samurai sword fittings. Paired with a fine gold-tone chain and presented in a wooden box, this vintage piece embodies the refined aesthetic of Japanese artistry.

Higo Zogan (inlay metalwork), a form of Damascene metal inlay, is a traditional Japanese handcraft with a 400-year history, exclusive to the Kumamoto region. This technique involves engraving designs into a metal base, which are then inlaid with gold and/or silver. The origins of this craft can be traced back to Damascus, Syria, where the Zogan inlay technique first emerged.
