This charming vintage hagoita (羽子板) paddle is a traditional Japanese decorative item, originally used in the New Year’s game hanetsuki (similar to badminton). Over time, hagoita became highly ornamental, often adorned with beautiful images of women in kimono, symbolizing good luck and protection from evil.
Features:
- Design: A refined depiction of a woman in vibrant kimono, crafted with embroidered fabric and decorative details.
- Reverse side: Painted with bamboo leaves and a crescent motif.
- Material: Wood with textile applique and decorative lacquer stand.
- Condition: Very good vintage condition; comes with its original box (some tape marks visible) and a black lacquer-style display stand.
Cultural meaning:
Hagoita are often given as auspicious gifts during the New Year season, believed to ward off misfortune and bring happiness. Today, they are collected as elegant interior decorations and symbols of Japanese tradition.
Perfect as a collectible item, a decorative accent for your home, or a meaningful gift for those who appreciate Japanese culture.
