This vintage kokeshi doll depicting a mother and child was created by the renowned Sosaku artist Hajime Miyashita はじめ宮下 (1940 - 2006), known for his refined and expressive style. Handcrafted from wood with painted details, it features a charming topknot hairstyle, patterned kimono, and a wonderfully expressive tilt to the head. Its title "おしん子守唄", that could be translated as "Oshin Lullaby reffers to a mother or caregiver carrying a child on her back while singing a lullaby, heavily inspired by the famous traditional Japanese story/drama "Oshin".
Miyashita studied traditional kokeshi under master Kobayashi Kichitaro and began his Sosaku career in 1959. Over the years, he received numerous prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award. His works were also acquired by members of the Japanese Imperial family.
