This elegant vintage Japanese tea set is designed specifically for cold beverages and showcases a refined combination of glass and traditional lacquered bamboo craftsmanship. The set consists of five glass cups and five matching lacquered bamboo coasters, presented in the original storage box with the original Japanese leaflet.
The glasses feature delicate etched floral motifs, while the coasters are made using basket-lacquerware (籃胎漆器 /rantai shikki)—a traditional technique in which finely split bamboo is woven, shaped, and then coated with lacquer. This method results in pieces that are lightweight yet durable, with a beautifully textured surface and a warm, natural aesthetic.
According to the leaflet, this technique has historical roots in East Asia and was introduced to Japan in antiquity. Basket-lacquerware is valued for its resistance to warping, cracking, and impact, as well as for its fine woven structure and artisanal finish. These qualities make it especially suitable for everyday use with cold drinks such as iced tea, chilled sake, water, or summer refreshments.
