This unique set of 5 small vintage plates is crafted using Kabazaiku (樺細工)—a traditional Japanese technique of applying hand-treated wild cherry bark onto wooden forms. Originating over 200 years ago in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture, Kabazaiku was developed by lower-ranked samurai as a refined side craft.
Each plate features an elegant, embossed ginkgo leaf motif, with a beautifully textured surface showing the rich reddish-brown hues and grain of cherry bark. The delicate ripples and natural imperfections reflect the wabi-sabi aesthetic—finding beauty in age and imperfection. Lightweight yet resilient, these plates are ideal for serving sweets, tea, or simply for display as minimalist art.
