This vintage Japanese creative Kokeshi doll, titled Hanawarabe (Flower Child), is a traditional craft piece from Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, a region renowned for its historic gold and silver leaf production. Crafted by Kanazawa Craftwork Manufacturer Tashima, this specific model features a metallic body decorated with a hand-painted bamboo motif applied over a specialized foil backing. While the main label on the storage box reads "Gold Leaf Kokeshi," the specific product sticker identifies this piece as the silver-colored Hanawarabe variation utilizing an aluminum foil technique designed to achieve a bright, reflective metallic finish.
The leafing and foil application follows Kanazawa's traditional craftsmanship methods, which trace their roots back to the Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain during the late 16th century, eventually developing into a government-designated traditional craft industry. The doll features a wooden head with delicately painted facial expressions and a small topknot structure, resting upon the cylindrical metallic-coated body. The bamboo design painted onto the base serves as a traditional Japanese symbol representing flexibility and resilience. This piece comes with its original cardboard presentation box bearing the product classification label and includes the original Japanese manufacturer's informational leaflet detailing the history of Kanazawa's leafing industry and care instructions.
