Vintage Japanese Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll attributed to Kazuo Takamizawa. Turned from natural wood, this tall, slender piece features a sculpted black hairstyle framing a minimalist, serene face with narrow eyes and softly blushed cheeks. The body is decorated with camellia blossoms (tsubaki) accented by green foliage and detailed pyrographic stippling. The doll is mounted on a matching black wooden display base.
Artisan note: Kazuo Takamizawa 高見沢一夫 / 高見澤一雄 (b. 1927) was a prominent postwar Sosaku (creative) kokeshi artist based in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. Beginning his craft in his early twenties, he earned national acclaim, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award in 1956. His work is celebrated for its serene facial expressions, balanced wooden forms, distinctive bobbed hairstyles, and detailed carved ornamentation.
