This vintage kokeshi doll was made by Yuji Takahashi雄司 高橋 (b. 1934). Lathed from a single block of wood in the traditional Kijiyama style, it features a seamless form, a tranquil expression, and classic painted striped kimono details.

The Kijiyama kokeshi is a unique style originating from the Yuzawa area of Akita Prefecture. Unlike the separate heads and bodies of many other styles, a classic Kijiyama kokeshi is lathed from a single block of wood, creating a seamless, rounded form. Their features are often simple and austere, with slightly sad, gentle faces and a distinctive hairstyle. They frequently feature detailed, painted kimono patterns, as seen in this beautiful vintage example by Yuji Takahashi.
