Kokeshi Toothpick Holder

This charming vintage Japanese kokeshi doll–shaped container is a delightful example of traditional Japanese folk art with a functional twist. Crafted from wood and decorated with hand-painted details, it combines the familiar rounded kokeshi silhouette with a small opening at the top, originally intended for holding toothpicks (or similar small items).

The figure features a warm natural wood tone enhanced with black and red painted accents. The stylized facial features and bold, abstract decorative motifs reflect classic mid-20th-century kokeshi design. The contrast between the visible wood grain and the painted areas gives the piece a distinctive, expressive character.

The base shows natural wood grain and turning marks consistent with traditional production methods. Minor surface wear, small scratches, and gentle patina are visible and are consistent with age, adding to the authenticity of this vintage piece. No cracks or structural damage observed.

Japanese kokeshi dolls are traditional wooden figures, first made by craftsmen in northern Japan over 150 years ago. Each kokeshi is hand-carved from wood, with a simple yet elegant shape—a round head and a straight, limbless body. They are often painted with floral or geometric patterns and have calm, minimalist facial features. Over time, kokeshi evolved from folk toys into collectible art pieces, with different regions creating their own unique styles and designs.
