Created by the legendary artisan Masao Watanabe 渡辺正雄 (1917–2003), this impressive Sosaku (creative) kokeshi is titled 晩秋 (Banshu, or "Late Autumn"). This large-scale masterpiece captures the quiet transition of the seasons. The doll features a beautiful gradient of deep brown and black tones, mimicking the fading light and earthy textures of autumn. Watanabe’s signature minimalist style is evident in the serene, hand-painted facial features and the elegant, tapering silhouette.

Artisan Note

Masao Watanabe is celebrated as one of Japan’s most influential kokeshi masters and a recipient of the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award. Born in Fukushima, Masao Watanabe was a disciple of the master Sato Tatsuo (Yajiro style). He became a pioneer of the creative kokeshi movement in the 1950s. His work is world-renowned for its emotional depth with pieces displayed in international institutions like the Nuremberg Toy Museum. Watanabe’s dolls are particularly famous for capturing the spirit of Mushin (innocence).
