This lovely pair "Chigo Zakura" (Cherry Blossom Child) Kokeshi dolls features a smooth, round face with peaceful closed eyes and a glossy black hairstyle. Their dark, elegant body is decorated with rich red brushstrokes that look like artistic tree branches. The contrast between the simple, calm face and the deep wood tones makes it a beautiful piece to display.
Artisan Note
Masao Watanabe is celebrated as one of Japan’s most influential kokeshi masters and a recipient of the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award. Born in Fukushima, Masao Watanabe was a disciple of the master Sato Tatsuo (Yajiro style). He became a pioneer of the creative kokeshi movement in the 1950s.
