This exceptional handcrafted wooden doll is a work of the highly acclaimed artist Miyajima Muhitsu (born 1929, Yamagata Prefecture). After beginning his career in traditional Kokeshi, Miyajima-san became a pioneer of the "Sosaku" (creative) movement in the 1950s. His mastery culminated in receiving the highest possible honor, the Prime Minister’s Award, in 1973. The title "Otome Camellia" (Otome Tsubaki) refers to a specific, delicate variety of the camellia flower, often symbolizing "pure love" or "modesty" in Japan.
