This exceptional handcrafted wooden doll is a work by the highly acclaimed artist Miyajima Muhitsu 宮島無筆 (born 1929, Yamagata Prefecture). After beginning his career in traditional kokeshi, Miyajima-san became a pioneer of the Sosaku (creative) movement in the 1950s. His mastery culminated in receiving the highest honor, the Prime Minister’s Award, in 1973.
This unusual kokeshi is tightly wrapped in a heavy “mino” (winter cloak). The doll is crafted from a combination of woods: the face is of a lighter color to highlight the facial features, while the darker wood of the coat reveals a rich grain that adds depth and character to the overall form.
