This exceptionally rare pair of vintage Japanese kokeshi dolls is meticulously hand-carved from Nachiguro-ishi (那智黒石), a premium natural black slate stone sourced exclusively from the mountains near Nachi Falls in Mie Prefecture. Famously prized as the material for luxury Go (strategy board game) stones and traditional inkstones, this unique stone gives the dolls a distinctive, smooth texture and a calm, deep-black finish.
Each figure features delicate, hand-etched details defining the hair, closed eyes, and serene expressions, beautifully complemented by frosted, etched sakura (cherry blossom) flower patterns adorning their headdresses and kimonos.
