This elegant set consists of a lacquered bamboo tray and matching bowl, made using the traditional rantai (籃胎) technique. Thin strips of bamboo are split, shaved, and carefully woven into shape, then reinforced and finished with multiple layers of urushi lacquer. The result is a lightweight yet durable form that combines basketry with lacquer craftsmanship.
The surface reveals the woven bamboo structure beneath the glossy black lacquer, subtly accented with red highlights. This interplay between structure and finish gives the set a refined yet folk-art character typical of Shōwa-period Japanese craft.
According to the original quality label, the materials are clearly specified:
- Base material: Bamboo
- Surface coating: Natural urushi lacquer (interior and exterior)
Rantai lacquerware is known for its resistance to everyday use. The lacquer surface does not react to common foodstuffs such as soy sauce, vinegar, or alcohol, making it suitable for practical use as well as display. At the same time, its lightness and warmth reflect the aesthetics of traditional Japanese daily utensils.
- Condition: The original box shows visible age-related wear and marks from long-term storage, but the tray and bowl themselves are in very good condition.
- Origin: Japan
- Technique: Rantai (woven bamboo with urushi lacquer)
- Material: Bamboo with urushi lacquer finish
- Period: Shōwa era
- Includes: Tray and bowl (set)
