This elegant vintage Japanese Rantai Shikki (籃胎漆器) set originates from Kyushu and represents a distinctive regional lacquer tradition known for its woven bamboo core and deep, translucent lacquer finish. The set consists of one round serving tray and five matching small plates/coasters, all finished in a rich reddish-brown urushi lacquer. The subtle basket-weave pattern visible beneath the lacquer is characteristic of Rantai Shikki and gives each piece depth, warmth, and a refined handcrafted appearance. Perfect for tea or sake service, wagashi (Japanese sweets), or as a refined decorative set for collectors of Japanese lacquerware.
According to the original leaflet, Rantai Shikki was developed in Kurume (Fukuoka Prefecture) in the late 19th century (around 1885). The technique combines bamboo weaving with multiple layers of lacquer, resulting in lightweight yet durable vessels that resist warping and cracking. Over time, these wares became widely appreciated as both functional tableware and decorative craft objects.
