This award-winning Kokeshi doll officially titled "Mushin" ("Innocence") often referred to by collectors as Seshin no Komugi" “(Spirit of Wheat”,) is the largest version of this particular design. It features a masterfully lathe-turned and beautifully proportioned silhouette. The central motif celebrates the golden-brown hues of a Japanese harvest, elegantly rendered through the traditional "Shou sugi ban" wood-burning technique. This method gives the kimono a tactile, three-dimensional quality. The doll’s serene face is minimalist, defined by angled eyes and a delicate suggestion of a nose and lips. Crowning the piece is an intricate topknot hairstyle, with hair falling gracefully on both sides of the face.
In 1969 a kokeshi entitled: “Spirit of Wheat” was purchased by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess.

About the artist:
Born in 1932 in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, Sadao Kishi was a visionary artisan who helped transform the Kokeshi from a simple folk toy into a respected modern art form. After beginning his journey into Sosaku (Creative) Kokeshi in 1950, he became a pillar of the movement, known for blending traditional woodworking with bold, sculptural innovation.His mastery was recognized at the highest levels in Japan; he was a frequent recipient of the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Award.
