This is a traditional Japanese kokeshi doll crafted in the Nakanosawa Takobozu style by Saito Tokuju 斎藤徳寿 (1926 - 2021). The doll features an elongated, tapered wooden torso hand-painted with vibrant red and black floral motifs flanked by bands of lathe-spun rings. Its oversized, rounded head displays the signature Takobozu expression, defined by large, wide-set eyes, a distinctly outlined nose, and a subtle mouth. Kokeshi of this kind earned the nickname Takobozu ("Octopus Monk") because their wide popping eyes, flush red facial markings, and bald, ringed crowns humorously resemble the face of an octopus.
