This exceptional creative Kokeshi is a handcrafted masterpiece by the renowned artist Sanpei Yamanaka. Born in 1926 in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Yamanaka-san was a highly distinguished figure in the Sosaku Kokeshi movement, famously winning the prestigious Prime Minister Award in 1979.
This doll beautifully showcases Yamanaka’s signature ability to portray soulful, expressive facial designs, particularly in his charming depictions of children. The piece celebrates the natural qualities of wood, utilizing the visible grain to create a warm, organic aesthetic. The body is decorated with simple, elegant bands.
