This beautiful vintage creative Kokeshi doll is a remarkable work by the highly acclaimed and award-winning artist Sato Suigai (b. 1920). Born in Gunma Prefecture, Sato originally trained as a traditional painter under the master Komuro Suiun before bringing his artistic vision to creative Kokeshi making in the late 1940s. His exceptional craftsmanship earned him the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award in 1966 and honors from Japan's Imperial Family, including Crown Prince Akihito.
The doll pictured features a unique variation of the artist's signature style. While Suigai Sato is famous for his deeply carved and painted wooden bodies, this piece features a beautifully tilted head with an elegant traditional bun hairstyle, a delicate red hair ornament, and finely detailed, expressive eyes and eyelashes. The body itself depicts a classic Japanese narrative scene.
