This vintage Sosaku Kokeshi is a handcrafted work by the award-winning artist Sanpei Yamanaka (1926-1992), 'Sejiaku' which means 'Silence'. This is a Sosaku Kokeshi doll made from dark, natural wood with a distinctive ribbed texture on the body and head. It features a minimalist face with thin eyes and a tiny red mouth, topped with a tiered wooden knot. The design highlights the natural wood grain and uses carved horizontal grooves instead of painted patterns for a modern, rustic appearance.
Yamanaka-san was born in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecturea and was a celebrated photographer, transitioned his artistic focus to the creative kokeshi, eventually winning the prestigious Prime Minister Award in 1979.
