This is a tall, slender wooden doll with a very simple and elegant design, created my the famous kokeshi master Shido Shozan (1932-1995). The round head tilts gently to one side, showing a calm and quiet facial expression made with simple lines. Its long, smooth body looks like it is wearing a simple coat or wrap with clean edges. Standing on a small dark base, this doll beautifully shows off the natural warmth of the wood.

About the artist: After graduating with a law degree in 1959, Shozan became arguably the most influential artist in the world of Sosaku Kokeshi doll-making. His highly collectible work is defined by a minimalist aesthetic, simple elegant shapes. Throughout his celebrated career, he won numerous honors, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, and even served as a judge for the All Japan Kokeshi Contest.
