This elegant Kokeshi pair is the work of the renowned artist Takahashi Hashime (1918-2002), a Sendai native who began his career as a fine arts painter and a craftsman of "Yuzen" silk kimono dyeing. His prestigious background is evident in the painterly designs of these dolls, which earned him the highest honor in the field, the Prime Minister’s Award.
The dolls feature Hashime-san’s trademark simple facial details, characterized by peaceful, narrow eyes and a delicately suggested mouth. Their faces are framed by minimalist black bangs and side fringes. The bold red pattern depicts the Tsubaki (Camellia) that symbolizes humility and the arrival of spring. These blossoms are rendered with deep red petals and detailed stamens.
