Created by the celebrated artist Toa Sekiguchi (b. 1942), this creative kokeshi is titled Tsubaki no Sato (Camellia Village). This elegant piece is a wonderful display of Sekiguchi’s painterly talent, featuring vibrant red camellia (Tsubaki) blossoms that wrap around the slender, tall body. The doll is topped with a distinctive, smaller wooden finial above the head, adding a unique architectural silhouette. Its face is minimalist, with delicate wood-burned lines that allow the warm, natural grain of the wood to remain the focal point. The combination of bold vermillion flowers and the smooth finish of the wood reflects the artist's ability to balance traditional themes with a sophisticated, modern aesthetic.
Artisan Note
Toa Sekiguchi is a highly influential Sosaku kokeshi artist from Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. Born into a famous woodworking family as the son of famous kokeshi master Sansaku Sekiguchi, he has carried on a prestigious legacy, winning the Prime Minister’s Award and several Ministry commendations. Known for his "painterly" approach, Toa often uses natural motifs like ginkgo leaves, fireworks, and seasonal flowers to express hope and beauty.
