This Tsugaru-style Kokeshi doll was handcrafted by Rokuchishu Abo (also known as Abo Mutchihide), a former apprentice of Sato Zenji. Based in the hills of Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture, Abo is a prominent maker of the Tsugaru strain, the youngest of the eleven traditional kokeshi lineages. Mr. Abo, who was an apprentice of the famous Sato Zenji, and his son (Masafumi) craft Tsugari Kokeshi in their workshop in the hills outside of Kuroishi, Aomori prefecture.
Carved from a solid piece of wood, the doll features the vibrant floral patterns and multicolor lathe-work (rokuru) lines typical of the Nuruyu style. It is finished with a traditional Okappa bob hairstyle and a topknot, with visible brushstrokes along the hairline. The piece is in very good vintage condition and is signed by the artisan on the base.
