This Tsugaru-style kokeshi doll is the work of Zenji Sato (1925- 1985), a highly respected craftsman from Aomori Prefecture. Known for refined simplicity, this piece features the artist’s signature slender form, including a round chest, thin waist, and a cone-shaped lower body. True to his unique style, the base of the doll includes his signature accompanied by hand-drawn "feet"—a humorous addition inspired by his master, Hidetaro Mori, which is rare since traditional kokeshi typically do not incorporate feet.
The doll displays the traditional Okappa hairstyle, a heavy black bob with a topknot and visible brush strokes along the edges. Its body is decorated with realistic floral motifs and traditional horizontal stripes, known as Rokuro Moyo, which appear at the top and bottom of the form.
About the Tsugaru Style
Established around 1914, the Tsugaru-kei is the youngest of the eleven traditional kokeshi strains. Originating in the hot-spring resorts of Aomori, these dolls are often recognized by their diverse shapes and the frequent use of Daruma faces or native Ainu-inspired designs on the body. While the strain is relatively young, it is celebrated for its realistic painting of flowers such as peonies and irises, often set against the backdrop of solid, lathe-turned wood.
