This vintage Japanese Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll is made by the award-winning master craftsman Ryozo Tsujita (1921–1996). Born in Odawara City, Tsujita-san began making dolls in 1959. A prominent member of the Modern Kokeshi Craft Artist Association, his exceptional skill earned him the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award in 1981.
This particular doll beautifully captures his distinct artistic style. It showcases the clean grain of natural wood and long, flowing, unbound hair framing a serene face. The minimalist design is completed with a delicate floral cluster on the head and a dark-stained ribbon motif etched into the lower body. The artist's vertical signature, reading 辻田 亮三 作 Tsujita Ryozo Saku (Made by Ryozo Tsujita), is hand-painted on the base.
