Vintage Japanese Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll crafted by Prime Minister’s Award–winning master artisan Ryozo Tsujita (辻田 亮三, 1921–1996). The doll features a tall, slender cylindrical body finished in a rich dark brown wood stain that highlights the natural vertical grain, decorated with incised and hand-painted red camellia (tsubaki) blossoms. The rounded head is left in a warm natural wood tone, showcasing fine wood grain with minimalist painted facial features and delicate incised hair lines.
The base is incised with the artist's signature, reading "辻田亮三作" (Tsujita Ryozo saku — "Made by Ryozo Tsujita").
About the Artisan:
Born in Odawara, Ryozo Tsujita (1921–1996) began crafting creative kokeshi in the late 1950s/early 1960s, drawing deep inspiration from the traditional woodwork of the neighboring Hakone region. A prominent member of the Modern Kokeshi Craft Artist Association and the Handicraft Society, he earned Japan's most prestigious honor in the field, the Prime Minister’s Award, in 1981. Tsujita is celebrated for his innovative forms, textured woodwork, and harmonious contrasts between light natural grains and deep, grooved stains.
