This elegant vintage Sosaku Kokeshi is a creative work by the famous Usaburo workshop. The doll features a striking, natural wood grain that is deeply textured through Usaburo's signature carving and wood-burning techniques. Its kimono is decorated with a beautiful pattern of layered autumn leaves in rich red and brown tones, representing the changing seasons. The face is simple and calm, with hand-painted hair that follows the rounded shape of the head.
The Usaburo workshop was founded by the celebrated master woodworker Okamoto Usaburo (1917–2009). Starting in 1950, Okamoto revolutionized kokeshi making by introducing new woods and carving techniques, eventually winning the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award. Today, the Usaburo studio remains Japan’s most prominent lineage in modern doll artistry
