This is a vintage wooden Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll crafted by the famous Usaburo worhskop. It features a dark wood body and hair, contrasting with a light, natural wood face. The doll has a classic bob hairstyle ("okappa"). The dark, sleek body is decorated with a carved and painted motif featuring delicate tall grasses and small red/pink blossoms near the base.
The Usaburo workshop was founded by the celebrated master woodworker Okamoto Usaburo (1917–2009). Starting in 1950, Okamoto revolutionized kokeshi making by introducing new woods and carving techniques, eventually winning the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award. Today, the Usaburo studio remains Japan’s most prominent lineage in modern doll artistry
