This creative kokeshi doll features a sleek, dark wooden bob hairstyle framing a peaceful, minimalist face with gentle closed eyes. Its body highlights deep, carved wood grain patterns reminiscent of natural tree bark, bound at the center by a simple yellow braided cord tied like an obi.
It is a significant work by the famous Usaburo workshop. The title “Mori Kan” can be interpreted as "Silence of the Forest" or "Essence of the Woods", evoking an image of deep quiet and connection with nature.
The Usaburo workshop was founded by the celebrated master woodworker Okamoto Usaburo (1917–2009). Starting in 1950, Okamoto revolutionized kokeshi making by introducing new woods and carving techniques, eventually winning the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award. Today, the Usaburo studio remains Japan’s most prominent lineage in modern doll artistry
